Alright people, tell me everything you know about shomer negia (including how to spell it!). What are the rules, exceptions, relevant texts? What are your experiences with it, how has it worked for you, what do you like/ dislike about it?
Also, maybe you can help me with some hypotheticals: how do you politely refuse to shake hands with someone of the opposite sex in business settings? Do you avoid sitting next to someone of the opposite sex on the bus, because your knees might touch if the driver takes the turns too fast?

What is the religious reasoning behind shomer negia? In what texts can I read more about it?

Shomer Negiyah
So I'm shomeres negiyah, and it's really not as complicated as it seems. You just don't touch anyone of the opposite sex, except certain close relatives (excluding brothers over bar mitzvah age), until you are married. You can't avoid brushing against people on the subway or on the bus, and since it's not intentional, it doesn't require teshuvah, but you cannot shake hands or engage in any intentional physical contact with anyone of the opposite gender.A great book to start with which is relatively easy to read is "The Magic Touch" by Gila Manolson. I also recommend her other book, "Outside/Inside", on being tznius. B'hatzlacha!
